PRESENTATION BY DR. HANES, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS, OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT, DC PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Superintendent Ackerman, who was to appear before the Commission was unable to attend. In her place were nourmaous officials of the Public School System.   Dr. Hanes apologized for her absence.

Dr. Hanes spoke on the Community Master Facilities Planning program developed in conjunction with DeJong and Associates, an educational facility planning organization.  This program offers all community residents in The District of Columbia input in the decision-making processes effecting schools in DC.  The school system will not impose its will on residents but work with community members to address their concerns.  Glover Park and Cathedral Heights are part of Area G.  Community input will allow the District of Columbia Public School system (DCPS) to tailor schools to the needs of the residents.

Former and much loved Principal Gill from Murch School spoke on the Summer Stars Program.  This program is designed to give supplemental instruction to 22,000 students in grade 1-12 who score below the norm in reading and math.  In addition, partnerships have been formed to provide educational services to 40 incarcerated students this summer.  90 sites throughout the city will be offering five-week summer programs.
