Commissioner Mizerek opened the meeting at 7:30pm
2nd DISTRICT POLICE
REPORT Sgt. Brown stated that the Smart machine is still in for repairs. The police department did not obtain a service contract thus Sgt. Brown was unable to give a timeframe for the machine to be back on the streets.
He stated that PSA 205 was leading the entire police department in property crime reductions. Sgt. Brown also stated that a theft from auto suspect had been locked up.
Commissioner Ritzenberg asked that members of the police department be on the lookout for red light runners and speeding cars on Cathedral Avenue now that it has been reopened for two- way traffic.

PRESENTATION BY DR. HANES,
DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS, OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT, DC PUBLIC
SCHOOLS
Superintendent Ackerman, who
was to appear before the Commission was unable to attend. In her place
were nourmaous officials of the Public School System. Dr. Hanes apologized for her absence.
Dr. Hanes spoke on the Community
Master Facilities Planning program developed in conjunction with DeJong
and Associates, an educational facility planning organization. This program offers all community residents
in The District of Columbia input in the decision-making processes effecting
schools in DC. The school
system will not impose its will on residents but work with community members
to address their concerns. Glover
Park and Cathedral Heights are part of Area G.
Community input will allow the District of Columbia Public School
system (DCPS) to tailor schools to the needs of the residents.
Former and much loved Principal
Gill from Murch School spoke on the Summer Stars Program. This program is designed to give supplemental
instruction to 22,000 students in grade 1-12 who score below the norm
in reading and math. In addition,
partnerships have been formed to provide educational services to 40 incarcerated
students this summer. 90
sites throughout the city will be offering five-week summer programs.

Commissioner Ritzenberg asked if evening courses were
available. Principal Gill
stated that evening programs are available year round
Mr. Jayyousi, Director of
Facilities, DC Public Schools provided an informational package that addressed
schools physical structures The packaged listed requested services, ongoing
reconstruction and repairs, and completed tasks for Ward Three schools.
Concerns raised by the members
of the audience included: late and incorrect pay for teachers, sanitation
violations on school property, lack of ground maintenance, shoddy workmanship
on repairs, incompetent janitorial staff.
Ward Three Councilmember Kathy
Patterson addressed the audience stating that she felt that DCPS conditions
had improved but there was room for additional improvements in all areas
of the school system.
